Topic: Archives New Zealand - Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga

Topic type:

Archives New Zealand, Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga is the official guardian of New Zealand’s public archives. They gather, store and protect an extremely wide range of material. Their holdings include the originals of the Treaty of Waitangi, government documents, maps, paintings, photographs and film.

Material in their collections also record history and document the relationship between Māori and the Crown. The archives are a valuable resource and have contributed to Treaty claim research, Māori language revitalisation, and iwi, hapu and whānau history.

The department and Te Reo o Taranaki Charitable Trust began working together in January 2009 on a project  to search and gather information held in Archives New Zealand from and about ngā iwi o Taranaki. Contributing to the Taranaki Reo Strategy, this project provides access to important records, written in te reo Taranaki from 1860 to 1900. Relating to ngā iwi o Taranaki, the records are held in Archives New Zealand’s Wellington office.
