The Census of Maori Population within the Port Nicholson District, 1850 is from the collection of the Province of New Munster and the original is held at Archives New Zealand/Te Rua Mahara o te Kawanatanga, Wellington Office. [Archives Reference: NM 8, 1850/283]

This census was conducted by H. Tacy Kemp, Native Secretary and covered the the Districts of Port Nicholson, Porirua, Waikanae, Otaki, Manawatu, Rangitikei, and Wairarapa, in the province of New Munster, in the beginning of 1850.

The Port Nicholson area included settlements or pa at Ohariu, Ohaua, Oterongo, Waiariki, Te Aro, Kumutoto, Pipitea, Kaiwara [Kaiwharawhara], Tiakiwai, Ngauranga, Pitone and Waiwhetu. Iwi and Hapu listed as residing in these settlements were Ngati Tama, Manukorihi, Ngati Hine, Ngati Te Waipango, Te Ati Awa, Ngati Ruanui, Taranaki, Ngati Te Whiti, Te Matehou, Ngati Tawhirikura, Ngati Hamua.
