Wharekauri (Chatham Islands) is located about 870 kms away to the East of New Zealand, in what is known as the "Roaring Forties". Two islands are permanently inhabited; Wharekauri, the main island has a population of about 640 people and Rangiauria (Pitt Island), which has a population of about 40 people. The main industries on the Chatham Islands are fishing, farming and tourism.
